Thomas S. Hansen
Video & Photography
In the first edition of this special project Thomas S. Hansen told something about himself and his motivation. Click HERE if you would like to read this introduction.
In this chapter I have asked Thomas some questions about his video and photography equipment. Naturally we didn't forget about his drone, which has an important role in his productions.
Photography
Question
"Do you make photographs (pictures) and If so, what kind of camera do you use?
And why did you choose for this camera?
Answer
Yes I take pictures as well, not as much as I did before I started with video, but I try to capture some.
I
use my main camera Sony a7s iii, my iPhone and mavic air 2 drone.
Most
cameras takes amazing photos these days. So I take what I have at hand.
I
have had many cameras but my favourite photo camera was a Fujifilm X-T1.
If i was only taking photo’s i would probably stick with the Fujifilm
camera.
Video
Question
"Do you use a camera to make videos or do you use an action cam as well?
If so, what kind of action cam do you use?
Why did you choose fort his camera? "
Answer
I use my Sony a7s iii that are quite new (this summer), I used the
Sony a6400 for all my earlier videos. I also use the GoPro hero 7 but
that is only for riding footage.
The main reason I upgraded
my main camera to the Sony a7s iii is because I’m gonna work on more
professional productions in the future. So I need to deliver the highest
possible quality when shooting commercials or paid videos.
Drone
Question
"I have seen great drone shots, what kind of drone do you use?
Why did you choose fort this drone? "
Answer
I use the DJI Mavic Air 2 drone.
I started out with the mavic mini and
the range on that thing was useless. And it struggled in windy
conditions.
So I had to upgrade for something with better range and
better wind performance in a small package.
The air 2 was the perfect
fit for my need.
Software
Question
" What kind of software do you use for video- and photo-editing?
Why did you choose fort his software?
Answer
I use Davinci Resolve 17 for editing on my iMac, LumaFusion on my iPad
Pro and affinity photo for photo edits.
I used to subscribe on
Lightroom, but I did not use it enough to justify the price tag when
other one time buy programs did good enough for my use.
Taking a video-shot
Question
Could you explain how you make a video shot e.g when you pass a camera
in a corner?
How many ‘takes’ do you need to get a good ‘shot’?
How much
time does it take you to make such a shot?
Answer
How can I explain this.
You set up the camera, try to find a good
composition and press record.
It only takes one shot; I drive past both
ways and I find out later in post production if I can use the footage or
not. Most time it is usable.
I shoot in 4K, so i have the option to
digitally zoom and adjust the footage if it’s off.
I have
never timed the process and I will probably never do because it is all
part of why I think this video stuff is so fun. I do it because I love
it.
Equipment protection
Question
How do you protect your video&photo equipment since you are using soft-panniers?
Answer
I don’t protect it.
I store most of my camera gear in my tank bag and
have good insurance on it.
It is a tool i use and the minute you are
afraid to use it, it will kill the joy of using it or destroy the
creative process.
People will be amazed how well built tech like this
is.
Tips and Tricks
Question
Do you have some tips & tricks for us, regarding video- and photography on a journey?
Answer
Learn to enjoy the process, taking a picture or making video is so
much more than just hit the record button.
Don’t get caught up in what
gear you have or what gear you are missing, focus more on how can you
tell a better story, use light and angles to your advantage and most
important learn how your equipment work.
Dear to Fail and learn from it.
Look at what others do, copy it and try to do the same with a twist of
you.
Do what you can’t .
